Two injured in Elk Grove crash
Two people were injured Thursday afternoon after their car veered off the northbound lanes of I-290 in Elk Grove Village, south of Biesterfield Road.
Both victims, who rescue workers said are in their late teens, were transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
Officials would not release their identities and Illinois State Police are still determining what caused the accident, which happened just after 3 p.m.
Elk Grove Fire Batallion Chief Mark Sellers said a white Volkswagen Jetta was driving on the inside left lane heading north when it struck the median that divided north and southbound lanes.
"They crossed all lanes of traffic, hit a light pole, went down in embankment and hit a concrete culvert which made the vehicle go airborne across the creek and finally hit a fence that lines the highway," Sellers said.
Witnesses told officials that one occupant was thrown from the vehicle, while the other was able to get out independently.
Sellers said one victim was transported on advanced life support with a suspected head injury, while the other was given advanced first aid.
While tending to the accident, officials closed one lane on I-290 for approximately one hour, said state police officials.
