Mom charged after driving into 12-year-old son

A Wisconsin woman faces multiple crimes after hitting her 12-year-old son with her car, then asking the boy to drive her away, Round Lake Beach police officials said.

Stephanie Kelly, 32, of the 100 block of Capital View Terrace in Madison, Wis., faces charges of reckless driving, driving while license revoked, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, permitting an unauthorized person to drive a car, and endangering the life and health of a child, Deputy Chief Rich Chiarello said Thursday.

She was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond and is expected back in court later this month.

Chiarello said police were called to the 1600 block of Goldenrod Terrace about 7 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of an argument. There, they found the 12-year-old boy bent over clutching his stomach and complaining he had been hit by a car.

Police learned Kelly hit the boy as she was backing out of the driveway while trying to get away from an unidentified man she argued with in the home, Chiarello said.

The man came out of the home and started to chase Kelly, so she drove down the street, Chiarello said.

When the man returned to the house, Chiarello said, Kelly stopped the car in the middle of the road, backed up to her 12-year-old son and asked him to drive the two of them to the end of the block. Kelly then phoned police, Chiarello said.

The boy was treated at the scene and released by paramedics. He suffered minor injuries.

Chiarello said the additional charges could be approved for Kelly or the man, pending a review by the Lake County States Attorney's Office.
