Election board needs open meeting
In the coming weeks, the DuPage County Election Commission will be instituting new ethics policies. As a former election judge, I find it imperative that transparency and accountability be maintained in the process that gives the people their voice.
In contrast to this view, the election commission has been constructing its new policy behind closed doors, a step that will take the entire county backward on the road to reform. In fact, these policies are being written by an outside consultant who draws a check from the taxpayer-funded election commission yet is not even bound by their requirements.
The commission needs to honor its motto ("Assuring the Consent of the Governed") by allowing public input at an organized meeting created specifically for the purpose of airing out these policies before they are written in stone. Only then can elected officials claim that they were elected by "the voice of the people."
