Well, what do you know? Harry Porterfield returns to Channel 2

Harry Porterfield has returned - to WBBM-TV Channel 2.

WLS-TV Channel 7 made it seem he was retiring when he left that station last month. Yet on Monday the 81-year-old Porterfield returned to Channel 2, where he originated his signature "Someone You Should Know" profiles in 1977.

As of next week, he'll be the regular anchor on Channel 2's 11 a.m. weekday newscast.

"Harry has a storied relationship with viewers in Chicago. It is both meaningful and important that the relationship continue," said Channel 2 News Director Jeff Kiernan. "We are proud to welcome Harry back to CBS 2. We are excited to have 'Someone You Should Know' return to CBS 2 where it started and having him back alongside Roseanne Tellez at 11 a.m."

"My career as a broadcast journalist has allowed me to report on the stories and people that have shaped our world," Porterfield added, "and I'm pleased that the leadership at CBS 2 is affording me an opportunity to continue reporting the stories that are important to the people in and around Chicago."

Porterfield first joined Channel 2 as a news writer in 1964 and soon made the shift on air to features reporter and 6 p.m. news anchor. He jumped to Channel 7 in 1985 after being demoted from 6 p.m. news anchor with the return of Bill Kurtis from a network position at CBS News. That led to a boycott organized by the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Yet, with Porterfield cut loose by Channel 7, he returned.
