Almost all Indian Trails Public Library District programs are free and everyone is welcome; however, most programs require registration in advance, unless otherwise noted.

Storytimes: Preschool Drop-in Storytime will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. today and Tuesday. These drop-in storytimes are for children ages 3 to pre-kindergarten 5. Kids attend on their own. No registration is required.

• In Lapsit Storytime, babies and their caretakers can enjoy stories, puppets, finger plays and playtime together from 10 to 10:30 a.m. today and March 3 and 7.

• Toddler Family Storytime will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. March 5, 6, 19 and 20. Encourage a child's pre-literacy skills with stories, songs and finger plays. This 30-minute program is designed for ages 18 months through 36 months and their caregivers.

Book discussions: Heather Resnick will lead a discussion of "The Measure of a Man" by Sidney Poitier from 7 to 8:45 p.m. today. Registration is required.

• Tom Hermann will discuss "Can't Wait to Get to Heaven" by Fanny Flagg from 10 to 11:30 a.m. March 18. New members are welcome. Registration is required.

• Heather Resnick will lead a discussion of "Genius Factory" by David Plotz from 7 to 8:45 p.m. March 31. Registration is required.

Lapsit: Babies and their caretakers can enjoy time together building emerging language skills through the use of songs, finger plays, rhymes, and stories, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. today.

Games Galore: Enjoy an afternoon of games from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today and Tuesday in the Large Meeting Room. No registration required.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66: This bus trip is a history of the historic road from Joliet to Pontiac and will take place March 13. The bus will depart from the library at 7:15 a.m. and return at about 6 p.m. The cost is $67, which is due at the time of registration. Today is the deadline to register. The fee includes an "all-you-can-eat" lunch. Make checks payable to Indian Trails Public Library District. The trip is open to adults only.

Poetic License: Poetic License, a writers group specifically for poets, will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and March 26. Members share creative ideas, learn about publishing markets, engage is writing exercises, and read poems aloud with co-facilitators Charlotte Willour and Sharon Faciana. Registration is required.

If I Loved You: In honor of Valentine's Day, Heather Braoudakis will present music about different kinds of love from musical theater, the big bands, Nat "King" Cole, Peggy Lee and the Hutton Sisters at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Take Charge, Take Heart: Clinical experts from Northwest Community Hospital will share ways to decrease the risk of heart disease in an interactive session at 7 p.m. Thursday. Co-sponsored with Northwest Community Hospital.

Friday Fun Teen Crafts: Teens in sixth through eighth grade can take part in a craft project from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. Explore aromatherapy on this extra day of the year by creating soap and candles. Anyone born on Feb. 29 will get a special gift. Bring a form of identification to show date of birth.

Russian Legends: Mike Lockett, award-winning storyteller from Normal Illinois, will guide participants through Russian legends filled with silly and wacky sound effects from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Everyone is welcome but the program is most appropriate for families with children in kindergarten through third grade. Registration is required.

Carson's Community Day: The Foundation for Indian Trails Public Library is participating in the Carson's Community Day Event Saturday. Coupons are available at the library. The booklet is $5 and participants will receive back $10 on their first purchases, and eight 20 percent off coupons. The entire $5 from each booklet sold is donated to the foundation.

First Ladies: In honor of Women's History Month, Sharon Alter, professor emerita of history and political science at William Rainey Harper College, will compare and contrast the roles, trials and tribulations, and accomplishments of Betty Ford, Rosalyn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton as first ladies at 1 p.m. Sunday. This program is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council. Registration is required and limited to 120.

Stoney River Steaks: Executive Chef Mark Luebker and General Manager Jason Yuhasz, from Stoney River Steaks in Deer Park, will prepare spinach salad with a warm vinaigrette, mushroom encrusted beef medallions, and au gratin potatoes at 7 p.m. March 3. A $3 tasting fee is due at the time of registration. Registration is required and limited to 120.

Princess for a Day: Grab a tiara and come listen to stories and make a craft from 7 to 7:30 p.m. March 4. The library will provide snacks and drinks. Registration is required.

Evening Writers Workshop: Published author Ginnie Foley facilitates as participants share and critique their work, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. March 4.

Kiss Me, I'm Irish: Enjoy classic Celtic tunes with Heather Braoudakis at 2 p.m. March 5. Heather will sing such favorite melodies as "Danny Boy," "Cockles and Mussels," "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" and many more. Registration is required and limited to 120.

Scotland -- 2006: Take an armchair trip to Scotland with world traveler Myrla Brand at 7 p.m. March 6. Learn about plaid, tossing the caber, rumbledethumps, Black Houses and doocots. Sample the highlights of Scotland: its food, architecture, history and culture. Learn about construction of the kilt and a thatch roof. See the new Parliament Building, the new Falkirk Wheel and the queen's yacht, Britannia. Attend the Garnock Highland Games. Registration is required and limited to 120. Chess for All Ages: Bill Harrison will be available to teach people of all ages the joys of playing chess from 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 9. All skill levels are welcome. No registration is required; just drop by.

Deanna Durbin: Musical historian Jack Diamond will discuss child prodigy soprano Deanna Durbin at 2 p.m. March 10. She shot to fame after being discovered by showman Eddie Cantor. Registration is required and limited to 120.

Dreams -- Spirit Speaks: The Rev. Karen Jacobson will lead this discussion of dreams at 7 p.m. March 10. Registration required and limited to 120. Co-sponsored with Buffalo Grove Park District.

McNulty Dancers: The McNulty Irish Dancers will perform at 7 p.m. March 12. Registration is required and limited to 100. Co-sponsored with Wheeling Park District.

Puzzle Exchange: The adults' and children's Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. March 15 in the Large Meeting Room. On the day of the exchange, bring finished puzzles and exchange them for new ones. No missing pieces. Registration is not required.

Cuentos en Pijamas: Families are invited to come to the library in their pajamas from 9:30 to 10 a.m. March 15 to listen to stories in Spanish and English. The program will incorporate rhymes, songs and a craft. Registration is required.

What Color is Your Brain?: Sheila Glazov's signature workshop and book "What Color Is Your Brain?" seek to explain why individual's perspectives differ from the viewpoints of others at 7 p.m. March 18. Sheila's methods are intended to break down barriers to build effective communication skills and cooperation, while minimizing frustration in numerous aspects of everyday life. Registration is required and limited to 120.

Family game night: Families are invited to an afternoon of gaming and fun, with Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero II and Wii games from 2 to 3:30 p.m. March 23. Under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. No registration required. Snacks will be provided.
