Man beats woman with bottle, punches her

A Chicago man faces an aggravated battery charge after he hit a woman in the head with a beer bottle and twice punched her in the face after she said she didn't have a crack pipe to give him, according to a Carpentersville police report.

Reports said the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the first block of Oxford Drive and that the man and woman are friends. Police said Elroy Watkins, 63, of the 1900 block of South Ridgeway Avenue in Chicago, and the woman were drinking alcohol in the woods behind the Foxview Apartments in Carpentersville when he asked her for the drug pipe.

As a result of the beating, the woman sustained two, half-inch cuts to the top of her head from the bottle and swelling and bleeding on her lip and a swollen jaw.

She was treated at Sherman Hospital in Elgin for her injuries.

Watkins has to pay $2,000 to get out of jail - he was unable to post bond and was awaiting a ride to the Kane County jail.

His next court date is Aug. 24 at the Kane County Judicial Center and he faces between two and five years in prison, upon conviction of the felony charge.
