Why destroy system that works for most?

I hope you realize the 44 million people without health care insurance include 22 million illegal immigrants. There were several amendments offered to take illegals out of the health care bill, but all failed. Of the remaining 22 million uninsured, 7 million are under the income level to qualify for government subsidized medicare, 7 million can afford health insurance but do not purchase for themselves.

That leaves about 8 million people who genuinely can't get health care. Why are the politicians willing to completely destroy a system that works for more than 98 percent of the population?
