Sox preach patience with Peavy

The White Sox want Jake Peavy in uniform as quickly as possible, and vice versa.

But the ace right-hander, who pitched 3 scoreless innings and had 5 strikeouts for Class AAA Charlotte Thursday night in his first minor-league rehab start, is still a work in progress.

"Peavy threw the ball very well," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters before the Sox opened a three-game series at Oakland Friday night. "(General manager) Kenny (Williams) told me he got a little tired at the end, but we expected that to happen. We can't get excited about it. Make sure we give him plenty of time to do what he's supposed to do.

"Obviously, he wants to pitch in the big leagues right away. But he has to be patient and we have to be patient."

Peavy's next start is scheduled for Tuesday, against Durham. If he makes one more rehab start after that, the 28-year-old pitcher could debut for the White Sox on Aug. 28 at New York against the Yankees.

>Getz on DL:

Jayson Nix has been filling in and should stay in the starting lineup until Getz returns at the end of the month.

The Sox also have Brent Lillibridge available. The utility infielder was recalled from Class AAA Charlotte to take Getz's roster spot.

Blow it up: Outside of the Metrodome, McAfee Coliseum might be the worst facility in baseball.

On Friday, the White Sox and A's played the opener of a three-game series a night after the NFL's Oakland Raiders hosted the Dallas Cowboys.

That left the playing field in rough shape.

"I'm not playing; I don't care," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I'm not going to get hurt. I've played on that field when it was like this."
