Man accused of 1987 murder still unfit for trial

BLOOMINGTON -- According to state psychiatric reports, 52-year-old Adam Rich remains unfit to stand trial almost 22 years after he was accused of murdering his wife in a Bloomington motel room.

Rich is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the November 1987 beating and suffocation of Doris Rich. He was in McLean County Circuit Court on Tuesday for a hearing to review the status of his case.

Psychiatrists examining Rich have deemed him chronically psychotic and recommended ongoing treatment for schizophrenia and paranoid personality disorder. Judge Robert Freitag renewed the order that will continue Rich's involuntary commitment at a state facility.

Rich has spent most of his adult life in psychiatric institutions. He was arrested in his wife's death one week after his discharge from a Springfield psychiatric institution.
