Treasurer extends hours:

Will County Treasurer Pat McGuire says his office will open one hour earlier and stay open one hour later through Sept. 1 to collect the second installment of property taxes. The taxes are due Sept. 1. The treasurer's office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Aug. 28 and then again Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet. Naperville closes road:

Julian Street in Naperville will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Thursday between Hillside Road and Gartner Road. The closure will allow the city to complete utility work related to the East Highlands Area Improvement Project. Traffic will be detoured to Chicago Avenue.

Naperville cancels meeting:

Naperville has canceled its Sept. 1 city council meeting. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the municipal center, 400 S. Eagle St. There also will be council workshops at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 and 28. The full list of meeting dates can be found at naperville.il.us.

Train for a 5K:

Naperville Park District is offering a 10-week program to teach families how to train together for 5K runs using fitness and exercise instruction, nutrition seminars and encouragement. "Generations: A Running Program for Families" is being sponsored through a partnership with the park district, Road Runner Sports and Whole Foods Market. The goal is to have participants complete the Naperville Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. The program costs $45 for residents and $75 for nonresidents. It begins at 5 p.m. Sept. 13. Animals to be blessed:

Animal lovers are invited to bring their dogs, cats and other pets to a "Blessing of the Beasts" worship service at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Fourth Street United Methodist Church, 551 S. Fourth St., Aurora. For details, call (630) 892-7202.

Carol Stream traffic patrols:

Carol Stream police arrested 19 motorists for impaired driving during a recent crackdown. Officers working overtime with funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety will continue to supplement regular patrols to apprehend impaired drivers for the duration of the enforcement effort, which runs through Labor Day.

Special needs sports grant:

Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. A representative will present the check Sept. 11 during the Larry Roesch/NEDSRA Golf Classic dinner at White Pines Golf Club in Bensenville. The funds will support the association's Adaptive Sports Program, which provides individuals with disabilities opportunities to participate in modified sports such as soccer, bowling and basketball. Special one-time activities include the annual Junior Wheelchair Bulls basketball Tournament and bowling tournaments.
