Questions for Daily Herald, columnist

I would like to ask two questions. The first is directed to your columnist, Ms. Froma Harrop: Since you dislike this country so much, why don't you go live somewhere else? The second is for the Daily Herald editors: Why do you print the rantings of this misanthrope?

A response to an inspirational letter

I am writing in response to the letter from high school student Anna Miller of Gurnee.

Anna is too young to remember but our 34th President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, said the following in a speech before the American Society of Newspaper Editors, April 16, 1953.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I remember this quote because my mother had it taped to the bathroom mirror of our home for as long as I can remember. My mother was an inspiration and prior to her death last year, she lived a long and fruitful life as a mother of six, schoolteacher, community volunteer and advocate for the disadvantaged.

Anna should know that you do not have to grow up to be president to make a difference in the world. In this season of thanks and remembrance, Anna's letter gives me hope.
