Moore, Whips dump Richmond
Hampshire's offensive line got it done when the Whip-Purs needed it.
Nursing a 3-point lead with 7 minutes to play, Hampshire drove 64 yards for a clinching score to defeat Richmond-Burton 21-11 in the Big Northern East opener for both teams.
Joe Moore broke free on a 19-yard run with 1:39 to play spoiling Richmond's homecoming. It was Moore's second touchdown of the night. Evan Brenner's 23-yard completion to Bo Price on third and 17 kept the drive alive.
Four plays later, Moore broke through the line, bounced off a tackler at the 10 and rumbled in for the score. Price caught a 17-yard pass from Brenner for Hampshire's first score.
The Whip-Purs won their second in a row after opening the season 0-3.
"Our offense has to be able to do that, and it's nice to see them come through like that," said Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh. "The defense came through when they had to."
Moore finished with 120 yards on 21 carries including a 1-yard run just before halftime that put the Whips ahead 14-3.
"It was unbelievable," Moore said. "The offensive line was blowing them off the ball the whole game."
Hampshire still led 14-3 after three quarters, but Richmond closed to within 3 points on Ken Riordan's 12-yard run and Adam Pittser's 2-point conversion run with 10:12 to play.
Brenner finished the night 6-of-10 for 89-yards. Price caught three of those for 47 yards.
