Rethink position on cemetery decor

I thank you, Amy Rubenacker, for putting my thoughts into words in your recent letter regarding Millburn Cemetery. My concern, as well as many others I'm sure, is Avon Cemetery in Grayslake. They have the same restrictions.

My husband and son are buried there and I purchased bronze urns. Why wasn't I told that silk flowers are not permitted?

There is no way that busy people and the elderly can get to the cemetery to keep fresh plants and flowers watered regularly.

I can understand restrictions on balloons and pinwheels and other garish décor, but dead flowers or no flowers makes the cemetery look neglected and loved ones forgotten. I'm sure the caretakers would rather have nothing there, but that's their job right? - Taking care.

So to Avon, Millburn and other area cemeteries, please rethink these rules as long as decorations are in good taste, or you can afford to provide a sprinkler system!
