Contreras forced back into rotation
Telling reporters in New York on Friday that "we don't have many choices," manager Ozzie Guillen said Jose Contreras is back in the rotation, and the struggling right-hander is going to start against the Yankees today.
Heavy rain is in the forecast, so there is a chance Contreras' comeback will be washed out.
In his last start, Contreras pitched just 22/3 innings at Boston on Monday and allowed 7 runs (1 earned). In his last 6 starts, the 37-year-old righty is 1-5 with a 6.16 ERA.
The White Sox decided against bringing up Carlos Torres or Daniel Hudson from Class AAA Charlotte to make the start.
Guillen considered using D.J. Carrasco against the Yankees today, but the bullpen is thin after Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink and Randy Williams were used in Friday's 5-2 loss to N.Y. in 10 innings.
Carrasco has pitched more innings this season (742/3) than any other American League reliever.
Peavy watch: Jake Peavy is scheduled to make his fourth, and likely final, rehab start for Class AAA Charlotte tonight at Norfolk.
Out since early June with a strained tendon in his right ankle, Peavy is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and has 13 strikeouts over 12 innings in 3 starts with Charlotte.
Peavy, who was hit on the elbow by a line drive in his last outing, hopes to throw 100 pitches against Norfolk.
If he makes it through in good shape, Peavy's first start for the White Sox could come at home Friday against the Red Sox.
Getz update: Playing for Charlotte on Friday night, Chris Getz was 0-for-3. The Sox' second baseman has been on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle. In three games with Charlotte, Getz is 0-for-7.
