Woodland residency event

Parents who want to enroll their children at Gurnee-based Woodland Elementary District 50 must show documentation proving they are district residents at events set from Tuesday, Aug. 11 to Thursday, Aug. 13. The proof-of-residency event is 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day at Woodland Middle School, 7000 Washington St., Gurnee. Parents also will have a chance to get their children's school and bus information, deposit funds in lunch accounts, obtain information about the Woodland Educational Foundation and more. Avoid bat contact

The Lake County Health Department continues to urge residents to avoid contact with bats, as four have tested positive for rabies in Lake County this year. The fourth rabid bat was found Aug. 1. Nine tested positive last year. The bat was collected safely by the homeowner, who did not have direct contact with the bat. Rabies is an almost always fatal disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. Most commonly, people get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. Rabies is preventable if the exposure is realized and if treatment is initiated promptly. Anyone who has direct contact with a bat or notices a bat acting in an unusual manner, such as flying in daylight or lying on the ground or in your home, should call (847) 949-9925. While bats can transmit rabies, they are also beneficial animals. Besides mosquitoes, bats eat crop-destroying pests, like moths, beetles and grasshoppers.
