Huntey's spring cleaning takes new form this year

With rain in the forecast, you may want to start your spring cleanup indoors this weekend.

This year, Huntley has discontinued its annual Spring Cleanup Day, usually held in early May, when residents could drop off large household items for recycling or disposal at a central location.

The reason, said Barb Read at public works, is because the village's new trash-hauling contract now allows for pickup of one large "bulk" item per week by MDC Environmental.

Residents may arrange pickup of "white goods" -- appliances, water heaters, etc -- by calling (815) 568-7274 and paying an extra fee.

MDC also picks up yard waste that is set out in biodegradable brown bags or in clearly marked garbage cans.

The village has new rules this year on open burning of dry landscape waste or brush.

Burning is allowed only on weekends from dawn to dusk, when winds are less than 10 mph. Fires must be at least 100 feet from houses and 50 feet from sheds, garages, or other structures. Burning is not permitted on roads, alleys, sidewalks, or anywhere that smoke might cause a visibility hazard for drivers.

The sale started yesterday and continues today from 9 a.m. to noon, with all prices now half-off. Prices will drop again tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon, with bargains at $3 per bag the final day of the sale. Proceeds help support church projects and activities. Call (847) 669-3691.

A rockin' thanks: The Huntley High School cast of "Grease" will entertain at District 158's Volunteer Appreciation Reception, at 7 p.m. April 28 at the school's Performing Arts Center.

Everyone who donates their time to help the district's students, teachers, or staff is invited to the annual party, says volunteer coordinator Eileen Delahanty.

No formal invitations will be mailed; anyone who has volunteered throughout the year, either from home or at the schools, is encouraged to save the date and wear their favorite '50s attire for a rockin' good time. Call (847) 659-3070.

Volunteers needed: A meeting for volunteers interested in working on Huntley's Fall Fest 2008 will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Huntley park district building, on Mill Street. Everyone is invited to attend.

Send your Huntley area news and event at least two weeks in advance to Diane Ayers at huntleynews@ameritech.net or call (847) 669-0848.
