Galena to host Civil War encampment

SPRINGFIELD -- The War Between the States will return to Galena with a Civil War encampment July 18-19 near the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site.

Re-enactors of the Old Northwest Volunteers will set up camp, offering visitors a chance to see typical gear and activity from the period.

Soldiers' activities include signing enlistment papers, receiving their bounty, and having medical exams. Troops will receive uniforms and weapons, elect officers and go through training.

There will be a picnic Saturday afternoon and a church service Sunday morning.

The event is free.
