Woman denies guilt in Batavia identity theft case
An Aurora woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges she stole a Batavia woman's identity to access her personal credit information.
Claudia G. Madrigal, 33, of the 1100 block of Solifsburg Avenue, was arraigned in front of Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson, who said she could be sentenced to two to five years in prison or probation if convicted of identity theft, a Class 3 felony.
Batavia police arrested Madrigal in March after the Batavia woman learned an Aurora insurance company that she wasn't familiar with had inquired about her credit on Jan. 28.
Police said they traced the inquiry to Madrigal, who is accused of using the woman's name and date of birth to run a credit report while working for the insurance agency. No money or physical property was stolen, and authorities have said a motive remains under investigation.
Madrigal returns to court Aug. 27 for motions and discovery.
