County's Stroger hospital regains full accreditation
The Cook County Bureau of Health announced Monday it has gained full accreditation with a key accrediting agency for John H. Stroger Hospital, which was on probation after a surprise inspection last spring.
The hospital was hit with 16 citations after a surprise inspection in March. But recently, another surprise inspection resulted in the Oak Brook-based Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization awarding the hospital full accreditation, said Bureau of Health spokesman Sean Howard in a prepared statement.
A separate accrediting agency also upgraded its position on the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology residency program, officials said. In November, the agency cited several problems in the program and recommended it be shut down. Bureau head Dr. Robert Simon, however, responded that most of the issues were minor and could be fixed relatively quickly.
Hospital officials said Monday the accrediting agency has given the hospital a one-year extension to fix the program's problems.
