Photo contest deadline
The Batavia MainStreet photography contest, "Always Moving By Nature," has a deadline of 5 p.m. today. Entrants are encouraged to submit photographs of Batavia in all four seasons, according to contest rules. Twelve winners are being selected, one to represent each month. The winning photographs are scheduled to be showcased in a 2010 Batavia calendar and at the Dec. 4 Arts Walk. For details, see "Latest News" at downtownbatavia.com.
50/50 raffle in Batavia
The Batavia Mothers Club Foundation is holding a 50/50 raffle in conjunction with its Autumn Arts and Craft Show Saturday. Winners need not be present. One hundred tickets are being sold at $20 apiece. Every 10th ticket pulled wins a prize, and the last ticket wins half the money raised in the raffle. Park district wins top award
The Fox Valley Park District won the Gold Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management this week from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association. Officials said it is the most prestigious national honor a park district can receive. The winners were announced Wednesday at a ceremony in Salt Lake City. Districts were judged on criteria such as long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism and program development.
Fish fries resume
The Fox River - Geneva American Legion Post 75 has fish fries from 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays at its hall, 22 S. Second St., Geneva. Cost is $7.50 to $9, plus cash bar. Chicken is also available. Call (630) 232-2171.
Trout season nears
Trout season opens one hour after sunrise Saturday in the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. The district will stock three lakes with rainbow trout - Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville will get 2,600 fish; Deep Quarry Lake at West Branch Forest Preserve in Bartlett with get 2,200 fish; and Grove Lake at Wood Dale Grove Forest Preserve in Wood Dale will get 450 fish. The fish will average about 1 pound each. To allow the trout to acclimate, the three lakes will be closed to all fishing through Oct. 16. For details, visit dupageforest.org.
