Fire falls to Wilmington in U.S. Open Cup, 1-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Chicago Fire dropped its third-round U.S. Open Cup match to the Wilmington Hammerheads 1-0 Tuesday night at Legion Stadium.

The loss eliminates the Fire from the annual tournament.

Midfielder Kenny Bundy's goal in the 37th minute was all the USL-2 club from Wilmington needed as he took a pass from defender Tim Karalexis and beat goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra.

The victory advances the Hammerheads to the quarterfinals. It represents the second time the club has beaten a Major League Soccer team, and the first since 2003, when they made their only other quarterfinal appearance.

Chicago posted 15 shots against the Hammerheads but was unable to find the back of the net in the 1-0 loss.

The Fire return to MLS action on Saturday as the team travels to Colorado to play the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
