Des Plaines Central School wins reading award

On Oct. 2, Central Elementary School in Des Plaines was honored for placing second in the 2008-09 Illinois State Exemplary Reading Program, sponsored by The Illinois Reading Council.

Former Central principal Janice Rashid, currently the director of curriculum for Des Plaines Elementary District 62, presented a plaque from the IRC to Principal Kelly Krueger and Leigh Radnitzer, LMC Specialist.

The purpose of the award is to call attention to outstanding reading programs across the state. As part of the evaluation process, the Exemplary Reading Program Award Committee visited Central last spring and was impressed with Central's program, which includes monthly genres and reading strategies, and a word of the week.

Every student and staff member incorporates these components into their teaching and learning activities.
