One badly hurt in Hoffman Estates crash

An 18-year-old from Taiwan remained hospitalized in intensive care Wednesday following Tuesday night's crash in Hoffman Estates.

Police have ticketed the teen's 18-year-old female cousin from Palatine, who was behind the wheel.

Wennie Chi of Palatine was cited for failure to yield while turning left, Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Greg Poulos said.

Authorities said Chi was driving a white 1997 Buick Regal that was motoring west around 9 p.m. on Route 62. A 16-year-old girl from Palatine sat next to her, while Chi's cousin sat in back without his seat belt fastened, Poulos said.

The three were on their way from Palatine to the movies, and the teen who was hospitalized was in the country visiting family, Poulos added.

As the car approached Huntington Drive, Chi turned left in the path of an eastbound 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 24-year-old Crystal Lake man, Poulos said. The impact threw the Jeep onto its side, but that driver wasn't badly hurt and was treated at the scene, authorities said.

Paramedics took Chi's cousin, whose name was not released, to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he remained in the ICU late Wednesday, Poulos said. Chi and the other passenger, a friend, were treated and released from St. Alexis Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Poulos added.

The eastbound lanes of Route 62 were closed until 1 a.m. Wednesday while police investigated.
