Elgin police continue to probe teen's shooting

Elgin police are probing an east side shooting late Sunday night which left a teenager with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

The victim, an 18-year-old male who lives on the 1200 block of Sebring Circle, was shot once in the abdomen and taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

Hospital officials declined to comment on the victim's condition, but Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.

Police were called at 10:35 p.m. Sunday to Sebring Circle for a report of multiple shots fired.

Swoboda said the victim was shot through the window of the home. He said investigators were working to determine if the shooter or shooters were in a vehicle or on foot.

An Elgin police report said the department's gang unit was assigned to the case, but Swoboda declined to classify it as a gang shooting until all the facts were known.

"We're' still investigating toward a motive," he said. "We not ready to say it's gang related at this time."

Swoboda said police received a call from one of the victim's family members who was driving him to the hospital. An ambulance met with the victim's vehicle and took the teen the rest of the way.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Elgin police at (847) 289-2700.
