Huntley finds ash borer in 33 trees

Although the first infestation was confirmed one year ago, only a small fraction of Huntley's ash trees have been attacked by the emerald ash borer, according to a recent survey.

Of the almost 2,300 ash trees in the village, only 33 -- about 1.4 percent -- have confirmed infestations, according to a survey completed last week.

The survey found 118 trees with signs of infestation, suggesting the village's ash borer problem could be more manageable than initially feared.

Still, village officials expect to find more infested trees when they conduct another survey next year.

"We anticipate eventually that all of these 118 trees or even (all the village's ash trees) could be gone in the next several years," Huntley Management Assistant Barb Read said. "We'll be keeping tabs on these trees annually."

The village will remove all 33 infested trees from village parkways - the strip of land between the sidewalk and the street.

The village is sending letters to residents who have an infested tree in front of their property with options for replacing the trees. To inquire about your tree or report a dead tree, call the village's tree hotline at (847) 515-5223.
