Grenade found inside sock on North Side sidewalk

Chicago police say a grenade found on a North Side sidewalk was real but incapable of exploding.

Officer Gabrielle Lesniak said the grenade was found inside a sock Sunday morning. She says a man picked the sock up and kept walking but alerted police once he realized what was inside.

Lesniak says the surrounding intersection was closed for about two hours while the department's bomb and arson unit responded to the scene. Once officers realized the grenade didn't pose a threat, they opened the area back up.
