Is cutting 4 MPG worth $1 Billion?
One Billion ($1,000,000,000) dollars for an increase of fuel efficiency for the new passenger cars to a whole four miles per gallon - that is the new gas for guzzlers law. It's a good example how lobby modification changes actual policy.
The original law was presented to remove gas guzzlers and replace them with ones that obtained at least 10 MPG better mileage. But our automotive production limited the range of selection presently and the only way to qualify them was to lower requirements. So it was written down to 22 MPG. Most of the 1980s foreign manufactured vehicles already matched or exceeded that. So gas guzzlers were qualified to be 18 MPG or lower. So now 18 MPG or less gets you ability to gain $4,550.00 toward a 22 MPG replacement.
