Solid rehab effort from Colon
With the all-star break coming, the White Sox have some time to decide on a fifth starter.
Clayton Richard has been filling the role, but the left-hander has been struggling and he lasted just 1 inning during Thursday's loss to the Indians.
The Sox won't need Richard, or a new starter, until July 21.
That gives Bartolo Colon time to make another rehab start for Class AAA Charlotte.
On Thursday night, Colon (sore left knee) pitched 5 innings against Norfolk and allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 5 innings.
Colon threw 65 pitches, 40 for strikes.
"It was nothing impressive, but it was good," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters before Friday's loss at Minnesota.
Freddy Garcia, signed to a minor-league contract on June 8, has yet to start pitching and is not an option to rejoin the White Sox anytime soon.
Late last month, Sox GM Kenny Williams said he wants to give Garcia extended time as the right-hander continues trying to bounce back from the shoulder surgery he had two years ago.
Minor matters: Carlos Quentin served as the designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with 1 RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 walks for Class AAA Charlotte Friday night.
Quentin (sore left foot) is batting .353 in 6 rehab games with the Knights.
Outfielder Jared Mitchell, the White Sox' first-round draft pick last month, reported to Class A Kannapolis on Thursday but has yet to make his pro debut.
Mitchell and the Sox agreed on a $1.2 million signing bonus Wednesday.
Good to go: After missing Wednesday's scheduled start with an illness, Twins left-hander Glen Perkins (4-4, 4.38 ERA) is reportedly feeling better and will be on the mound against the Sox tonight.
Perkins has won his last 2 starts while allowing just 2 runs in 14 innings.
