Batavia 48, St. Charles East 32

The Batavia girls basketball team celebrated seniors JoAnna Wagner and Tracy Ferguson's last game on the Bulldogs' home court in the best way possible -- with a win.

The Bulldogs beat nonconference opponent St. Charles East, 48-32, in Batavia Tuesday.

Wagner and Ferguson were honored before the game and both were in the starting lineup. Wagner had limited playing time due to an ACL injury she suffered earlier this season. She made the best of her time in, as she scored the last basket of the game at the buzzer.

Ferguson finished the game with 9 points, 3 steals and 5 rebounds.

"I think we were all just pumped," Ferguson said. "It is our last year, so we just went all out."

Even though it was Senior Night, a trio of Batavia juniors, Natalie Tarter, Melissa Norville and Kara Lydon, helped the Bulldogs to a 10-0 run after St. Charles East led early in the game.

The run began at the end of the first and continued into the second quarter, when the Bulldogs outscored the Saints 19-8 for a 26-11 lead at the break.

The Bulldogs (19-4 overall) kept their double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The Saints came within 11 twice in the third quarter, but Batavia responded every time.

"We didn't panic…and that's a testament to our offense," Batavia coach Tim DeBruycker said. "We kept doing what we needed to do to keep our lead, and that's what I was happy with."

The Bulldogs' biggest lead of the game was 46-28 with 2:24 left to play after Ferguson's basket.

The Saints shot just 12-for-48 from the field.

"Talk about a bad shooting night," St. Charles East coach Lori Drumtra said. "I thought we got decent looks, but we just weren't hitting the basket. We hit some of those shots, it's a different game…it just was not a good night for us shooting. At all. It was just one of those nights."

Lydon led all scorers with 11 points. Tarter finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Every player on Batavia's roster clocked in time.

Jaime Rust led the way for the Saints (14-10 overall) with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Lexi Baltes was next with 7 points and 5 rebounds.

"Batavia played well," Drumtra said. "Give credit where credit is due. They made their shots."
