Southeast Missouri tops NIU 70-64 in OT
Derek Thompson scored 19 points and LaMont Russell grabbed 16 rebounds as Southeast Missouri defeated Northern Illinois in overtime on Sunday, 70-64.
Thompson's 3-pointer in the first minute of the extra period put Southeast Missouri (1-2) ahead to stay. Cameron Butler, who had 12 points in the game, made five free throws in overtime to seal the victory for the Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri led by as many as 12 points early in the second half but Northern Illinois went on a 16-3 to take the lead at 41-40. The Redhawks led again most of the rest of the half, but Tony Nixon's 3-pointer, his only points of the game, with 6 seconds to go tied it at 57.
Darion Anderson had a game-high 23 points and added 13 rebounds for the Huskies (1-3).
