Solicitors must get license, follow rules
Buffalo Grove only allows solicitors that have applied for a permit, including those that solicit on the corners, police said.
Part of the permit process is to verify through the Illinois Attorney General's office the legitimacy of the organization. Their vest must be in good condition and clearly state the name of the organization.
The village cannot discriminate in issuing permits and must either grant permits to everyone who is legitimate or none.
Solicitors cannot be abusive, however, and they cannot block or hinder traffic. Those going door to door must heed "No Solicitor or Peddler" signs. Should you encounter a solicitor or peddler that does not conduct themselves by the rules, call 911. The village clerk may suspend or rescind the permit if the person isn't following the rules.
District 62 seeks senior volunteers
Des Plaines Elementary School District 62 is seeking volunteers to spend one hour a week helping a child strengthen skills in reading.

This extra help and attention increases the child's self-esteem and fosters a positive attitude toward learning. . Volunteer opportunities exist at Central, Orchard Place, South, and Plainfield Elementary Schools.
Training is 1-3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 and 12-3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15 in the Forest Elementary School Board Room, 1375 Fifth Ave. Call (847) 824-8070.
