Can't play Washington every game; Phillies jump all over Cubs, Lilly
Like a racehorse moving up in class, the Cubs found out things change in a hurry.
After beating up on the Washington Nationals over the weekend and playing through some of their own not-so-stellar play, the Cubs couldn't get away with any of that Monday night in a 10-1 loss to Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park.
The loss snapped a four-game Cubs winning streak, and the defending world-champion Phillies extended their own streak to 9 straight victories.
Taking the brunt of Monday's loss was starting pitcher Ted Lilly (9-7), who was making his first start after the all-star break after coming up with an inflamed left knee over the weekend in Washington.
Lilly lasted just 4 innings, as he gave up 8 hits and 9 runs, 7 earned. This one was over early. In the first, Lilly gave up a two-out, 3-run homer to Raul Ibanez after Ibanez got a close call on a 1-2 pitch.
In the second, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz hit a 2-run homer. Lilly threw 28 pitches in the first inning and 27 in the second.
"We are not going to win if I am giving us less than 4 innings," Lilly told reporters. "The (Phillies') lineup is a big challenge."
Lilly got his only 1-2-3 inning in the third, but things fell completely apart in the fourth, when the Phillies scored 4 runs.
Jayson Werth led off with a walk, and he went to second on a single by Pedro Feliz. Ruiz doubled home Werth. Lilly struck out pitcher Rodrigo Lopez before Jimmy Rollins hit a sacrifice fly.
After that, Shane Victorino lifted a flyball to deep left-center. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano drew a bead on the ball, but he dropped it for a run-scoring error. Chase Utley singled home Victorino before getting thrown out on the bases, but the damage was done.
Ryan Theriot drove in the only Cubs run with a fifth-inning single.
The Cubs (47-44) got 2 scoreless innings of relief from rookie Jeff Stevens and 1 from Aaron Heilman.
"They are a great team, the champs," Theriot told reporters. "They are even better with Ibanez and we have to play better if we want to have a chance."
