Des Plaines abuse conviction:

A Des Plaines man has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old relative. A Cook County jury has found Gerson Carnalla-Ruiz, 38, guilty on three counts of predatory criminal sex assault against the girl, who is confined to a wheelchair and who testified against him. He is due to be sentenced Aug. 6.

Hanover Park adds officer:

The Hanover Park village board has approved the addition of one officer to the patrol division, increasing the department to 55 sworn police officers. The annual cost is about $100,000 in salary, pension, insurance and other benefits. The village decided to authorize the position because the status of a Community Oriented Policing Services grant for three additional officers is unknown at this time.

City tests automated system:

Des Plaines has began testing a new automated community notification system that allows recorded messages to be relayed to targeted areas. The goal of the system is keep residents informed during emergencies. The system can also be used to distribute informational announcements and notices on ward meetings and public hearings on critical issues. It's activated over telephone lines. This fall, residents will be able to signup for alerts using their cell phones and e-mail addresses. The alert system is funded through 911 revenues.

Bread truck overturns on I-90:

Three people were slightly injured when a semi collided with a van at about 5:30 a.m. Friday on the Jane Addams Tollway near Barrington Road, state police said. The truck, carrying about 15,000 pounds of breads, rolled over and ended up in a ditch, snarling traffic for hours. It wasn't immediately unclear what caused the crash. The semi driver, the driver of the van and a 10-year-old were all injured. A puppy that escaped from the van after the crash was later recovered and uninjured.
