Man gets 20-year sentence for stabbing child

JOLIET -- A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly stabbing his 6-week-old child in the chest.

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow says 26-year-old Miguel Villarreal of Romeoville received the sentence after being convicted of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child.

Glasgow says Villarreal allegedly locked himself in a bathroom with the baby in May 2008 after arguing with the child's mother. He is accused of stabbing the infant twice with a folding knife before stabbing himself in the stomach.

The state's attorney says the knife didn't pierce the baby's chest plate and the child lived. He says Villarreal recovered after emergency surgery.
