McHenry Co. man gets 23 years for Carol Stream abuse
When Marcus Tyms showed up at a Carol Stream park in September 2007, he expected to meet an underage girl for a tryst, authorities say.
Instead, Tyms, 25, got rejected by the 13-year-old and landed himself a 23 year-term in federal prison for enticing an underage girl to engage in sexual activity, U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald announced Monday.
U.S. District Judge Milton Shadur tacked on 10 of those 23 years because Tyms, formerly of Union, already was registered as a sex offender when he made arrangements to meet the girl.
Tyms met with his would-be victim just hours after re-registering as a sex offender for a 2005 conviction for indecent solicitation of a child, according to police.
Authorities say Tyms corresponded with the 13-year-old girl online for three months, exchanging explicit photos with her before meeting her at the park.
But when Tyms met the girl, she tried to back out, and he hit her, prompting Carol Stream police to arrest him, police say.
Shadur also sentenced Tyms to five years of supervised release to be served when he is let out of prison and ordered him to pay a $10,000 fine.
