Dropouts marked absent at Chicago school

A published report says that one Chicago school is failing to mark some dropout students as absent.

A handful of truant students from Bowen Environmental Studies Team High School have wrongly been listed on attendance records as "school function," like a school trip, for weeks at a time.

That's according to an investigation published Sunday, In one instance, a student was on "school function" for 50 consecutive school days.

Officials with Chicago Public Schools say they are now investigating attendance at the South Side high school.

Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond says the district randomly audits attendance records.

The school's principal says she was unaware of any attendance record keeping issues at the school.
