St. Charles man admits to stabbing

A St. Charles man has been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison for stabbing another man with a pocket knife, authorities said Thursday.

Garrett C. Ginn, 26, admitted guilt June 12 to armed violence, a Class 2 felony, and received the sentence under a plea bargain accepted by Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson.

Prosecutors said Ginn and the victim were arguing at an apartment on the 300 block of South Fourth Street about 4 a.m. April 16 when Ginn pulled out a small knife and cut the man in the head, neck and upper torso. The 24-year-old victim required nine stitches to close one puncture wound in his chest, according to the Kane County state's attorney's office.

Ginn ran away after the stabbing, but was arrested about 30 minutes later walking in the 0-100 block of East State Street in Geneva. Police have said the stabbing happened after Ginn punched a woman in the face at the party, and partygoers forced him outside.

Ginn faced up to seven years in prison if convicted of armed violence at trial. Under state law, he must serve at least 85 percent of his 54-month prison sentence, or a little less than four years.
