Fox, Hoffpauir could see DH duty
The Cubs welcomed their third American League opponent to Wrigley Field on Friday, when the Cleveland Indians came to town.
The Cubs will play AL-style ball next week, when they travel to Detroit and then come back to Chicago to play the White Sox on the South Side.
Manager Lou Piniella will have his choices for designated hitter. Jake Fox, who got his first start of the year at third base Friday, is a candidate, as is Micah Hoffpauir.
"I think that both of them deserve an opportunity," Piniella said. "I originally thought that we could use the DH spot to rest a regular or two from time to time. We might be able to do it. I might be able to put Derrek Lee in the DH spot and put Fox or Hoffpauir at first.
"I might be able to do it in the outfield, where we could use one of our outfielders DHing and put Fox or Hoffpauir in the outfield. Let's see how it works out, but yes, I see both of them getting at-bats."
Guzman sore: Reliever Angel Guzman, as suspected, is ailing with right-triceps soreness. He's taking medication and stretching.
"Wednesday, he felt that again," Lou Piniella said of Guzman's 34-pitch, 2-inning relief appearance against the White Sox.
It was Guzman's first appearance since June 10. When the Cubs came off the road last Friday, Guzman threw from the outfield grass under supervision of the trainer. At the time, Piniella said a couple of his relievers were "tender," but he didn't name names.
"It's not serious," Piniella said. "It's muscular. But he does feel it down here (pointing under the arm)."
Minor matters: Outfielder Tyler Colvin, the Cubs' No. 1 draft pick in 2006, hit a pair of homers Thursday for Class AA Tennessee. The second homer was a game-winner in the 12th inning.
Since his promotion from Class A Daytona (as he recovered from elbow surgery), Colvin was batting .319 with 4 homers, an on-base percentage of .353 and a slugging percentage of .617 entering Friday.
At Class AAA Iowa, Mitch Atkins recorded his third quality start in a row during a 9-3 win over Memphis.
At Class A Peoria, catcher Michael Brenly (son of TV analyst Bob Brenly) recorded his second straight 3-hit game with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.
