Sox error costly as Brewers score 7 in 6th, 7th innings

MILWAUKEE - What White Sox team was going to show up Friday night in the interleague opener against the Brewers?

Flip a coin.

"This balllclub can tease you," manager Ozzie Guillen said before the Sox' 7-2 loss to Milwaukee. "They play for one week good and I say, 'OK, here we go. Who can we add?' One week later, we're like 'Wow.' ''

That's a bad wow, and Guillen could have said it again after the Sox looked good while building a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and not so good when the Brewers rallied for 3 runs in the sixth inning and 4 in the seventh at jammed Miller Park.

White Sox starter Clayton Richard carried a shutout into the sixth inning, but he was pulled after making an error that allowed leadoff hitter Prince Fiedler to reach first base.

Octavio Dotel came on in relief and was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, but Richard took the blame.

"It's unfortunate to put that loss on the bullpen," Richard said. "The game was 2-0 and they (Brewers) didn't have momentum. That play changes the whole game."

D.J. Carrasco has been the Sox' most reliable reliever lately, but he was tagged for 4 runs on 5 hits in the seventh inning as the Brewers broke the game open.

Making his major-league debut, Aaron Poreda pitched the final 12/3 innings and allowed only 1 hit while striking out three.

"It was amazing," said Poreda, who was called up from Class AA Birmingham on Tuesday. "I felt like I was going out to battle out there. I was throwing as hard as I could and never giving up. It was a tough loss, so you can't be too excited. But it was my first major-league outing, so I'm on cloud nine."

Around the same time Poreda was coming up from the minor leagues, general manager Kenny Williams admitted he might have to summon even more young talent from the farm and start dumping veteran players if the White Sox continue to flounder.

Time will tell on that front, but the season is moving well into June and the Sox continue playing like a team that looks destined to subtract instead of add.

Guillen is still waiting for the White Sox to go on an extended run, but he's not exactly brimming with confidence.

"I don't even know my ballclub yet because it's so up and down," Guillen said. "We play a great week and all of the sudden a week later we're back playing really terrible baseball."

Brewers 7, White Sox 2

Friday's grade: D. The Sox set the early tone, but they quickly faded once Milwaukee woke up in the sixth inning.

Play of the game: Brewers right fielder Corey Hart robbed Chris Getz of an extra-base hit and 2 RBI in the top of the sixth with a diving catch.

Still struggling: Gordon Beckham was 0-for-4, dropping his batting average to .071 (2-for-28). The rookie has also looked uncomfortable playing third base.

Nice debut: Left-hander Aaron Poreda didn't allow a run and had 3 strikeouts in his first big-league game.
