Carol Stream's summer festival is a rockin' good time

Carol Stream's Summer in the Center festival returns this weekend to help the village celebrate its 50th anniversary.

To give the party an extra boost, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band will travel from New York to play a three-plus-hour show Saturday. Chris Oakley, assistant to the village manager, said Carol Stream usually tries to recruit local bands but decided to bring in someone special this year.

"It's working-class music, and we've got a lot of hardworking people in town," he said.

The tribute band stays true to the Springsteen form by playing an extra-long set that will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The 12th year of the festival also will include an expanded teenage music festival. Bands will play from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Friday in addition to the scheduled Saturday event, which is sponsored by the Youth Council.

"It's been so successful, we've decided to add another night," Oakley said. "It really is a fun thing. It gives budding musicians an opportunity to craft their stage presence."

The carnival, which has become a main attraction, will return with at least a dozen rides for four nights starting today.

Plenty of children's entertainment - from jugglers to magicians to a beach party - will be available all weekend, along with video game tournaments. The festival will include at least two bands every night from today through Sunday and a beer garden.

The events all will take place at Town Center at the corner of Lies Road and Gary Avenue.
