Downstate police officer gunned down

CENTREVILLE -- Authorities are investigating the death of a police officer who was gunned down in the southwestern Illinois town of Centreville.

St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone says 58-year-old Greg Jonas died early Tuesday after being shot once in the back of the head outside a public housing complex.

His body was found on the street, near his police cruiser.

The Greater Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is joining Illinois State Police in the investigation. No arrests have been made.

Residents of the housing complex known as "The Fireworks" because of the frequent gunfire there say Jonas was a regular. And Centreville Mayor Marius Jackson remembers Jonas as an officer who didn't tolerate nonsense.
