Police: Carpentersville man set up son, 13, to take the rap
A Carpentersville man is accused of setting his 13-year-old son up to be the fall guy for a crime he committed, officials said.
Police say Rodney D. Coleman, 31, on Saturday called 911 and made threats against the police. Police began investigating the case, and on Monday Coleman's son gave a bogus name and age to an officer and said he used his dad's cell phone to make the angry phone call, reports said.
But the details of and the voice on the recorded phone call and didn't match the son's claims, reports said.
The son and his stepmother later told police Coleman put the teenager up to lie about making the call in an attempt to get the charges against the father dropped, police said.
It didn't work.
Coleman, of the 0-100 block of Hickory Court, has been charged with intimidation and threatening a public official, obstructing justice and disorderly conduct for the allegation of filing a false police report. The charges are all felonies.
Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the threat stemmed from a June 10 incident in which an officer arrested Coleman's 30-year-old wife and charged her with obstructing a peace officer when she refused to stand by while he verified whether a warrant for her arrest remained active.
As it turns out, the warrant had been dismissed, Bosshart said.
"If she just had waited for the process to be done, none of this would have happened," Bosshart said.
On Saturday, Coleman called 911 twice looking for the officer who arrested his wife and, during one of those phone calls, "said he would bust his face when he saw him," Bosshart said.
Judge John A. Noverini Wednesday morning set Coleman's bond at $80,000,
He remained in custody at the Kane County jail Wednesday, unable to post bond, and is due in court July 1 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
A guilty verdict on the biggest felony could put him away for up to five years.
