Frontier Days 2009 schedule

Festival July 1-July 5 at Recreation Park, 500 E. Miner St., Arlington Heights. No pets on grounds; no coolers. www.frontierdays.org.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 1 (5-11 p.m.)

5-6:30 p.m. Hockey skills, on the tennis courts, for children and adults of all ages. No blades.

5:30-8 p.m. Dog Frisbee Catch & Fetch, in the outfield. Register 5:30-6pm; competition at 6:15 p.m. (847) 577-3000.

6:30-9:30 p.m. Stage West: Battle of the Bands, teen rock. To enter, call the Teen Center at (847) 577-5394.

7:45 p.m. Main Stage: Opening ceremonies.

8 p.m. Main Stage: Kentucky Headhunters (country/rock).

9:15-10:45 p.m. Frontier Stage: Heartache Tonight (Eagles covers).

11 p.m. Park closes.

THURSDAY, JULY 2 (5 p.m.-midnight)

5 p.m.-midnight. Bargain carnival rides (sales end at 11 p.m.)

5-6:30 p.m. Baseball/softball skills. Pitching speed, base running, and hitting contest for children ages 6-12. At baseball diamond west of Hickory Street.

6-7 p.m. Stage West: Teen Band Night

8 p.m. Main stage: Blues Traveler (Rock band with blues influences).

9:15-11:45 p.m. Frontier stage: ARRA (Rock band covering Journey, Boston, Styx, more).

Midnight. Park closes.

FRIDAY, JULY 3 (Noon-midnight)

8 a.m.-7 p.m. 3v3 soccer tournament; fields at Hickory and Miner streets. (847) 602-4072.

10 a.m. Bike rally, all ages. Meet near the playground in Recreation Park.

10 a.m.-1 p.m. Citizens with Disabilities Day. Register at Frontier Store at 9:30 a.m. Carnival rides 10-11:30 a.m. Entertainment starting at 11 a.m. at Frontier Stage. Lunch, 11:30 a.m. at the Frontier Stage.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. Teen volleyball tournament, ages 13-18, on outfield by Main Stage.

Noon-midnight. Carnival open. Bargain rides noon-6 p.m.

Noon-4 p.m. Children's pony rides, near Stage West. $2 per ride.

1-2 p.m. Stage West: Bill Hoffman's exotic animals.

1-3 p.m. Artists in the Park, for children. By the tennis courts.

1-4 p.m. Face painting, west side of the swimming pool.

1:30-3 p.m. Wheelchair tennis, on tennis courts.

2:30-3:15 p.m. Stage West: Mark Spreyer of Stillman Nature Center shows birds of prey.

4-4:45 p.m. Stage West: Arlington Heights Police Department K-9 Unit.

SATURDAY, JULY 4 (noon-midnight)

10 a.m. Fourth of July parade, "Land of Lincoln: 200 years of Pioneer Spirit." Steps off at Oakton and Dunton, ends at Recreation Park.

10 a.m. Decorated bike parade. Check in with parade marshal at Oakton and Highland; parade ends at Hickory. Open to ages 4 and older. No Big Wheels.

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Arts and crafts marketplace.

Noon-3 p.m. Decorated chair competition. Bring decorated chair to circle drive near Belmont and Miner streets. Judging at 2 p.m. (847) 368-5232

Noon-3 p.m. Pioneer craft exhibit, west side of pool.

Noon-4 p.m. Bingo at Frontier Stage for 18 and older. Card sales at noon, games at 12:30 p.m.

Noon-4 p.m. Children's pony rides near Stage West. $2 per ride.

12:30 p.m. Jessie White Tumblers, on the tennis courts.

1-2 p.m. Fun fair for children ages 4-8 at the baseball diamond.

1-3 p.m. Artists in the Park, for children. Near the tennis courts.

1-4 p.m. Face painting, west side of swimming pool. Free.

1:30-3 p.m. Frisbee golf and skills, soccer field at Miner and Hickory. All ages.

1:30-3:30 p.m. Cholesterol screening, by appointment in Teen Center. Sign up in person at First Aid Tent. $10.

2:30-3 p.m. Stage West: Buttons the Clown magic show

3:15-4:15 p.m. Punt, Pass & Kick football. Competition divided by age. On soccer field at Miner and Hickory.

3:30-4:15 p.m. Stage West: Dave's Traveling World of Reptiles.

5:15-6 p.m. Stage West: "Circus Boy" Bobby Hunt; he toured with Ringling Bros.

5:15-7:45 p.m. Frontier Stage: Kevin Purcell and the Nightburners (rockin' swamp boogie)

5:45-6:30 p.m. Stage West: Solid Aire (blues, oldies, folk, pop).

8 p.m. Main Stage: The Cherry Poppin' Daddies (lyric-driven mix of punk, funk, ska and swing)

9:15-11:45 p.m. Frontier Stage: Afrodisiacs (high energy disco, dance, funk)

Midnight. Park closes.

SUNDAY, JULY 5 (noon-10 p.m.)

7:30 a.m. Frontier Days Stampede Run. Choose between the 5K or 10K run, a 5K Fitness Walk, or a quarter-mile Kids Dash. Entry forms at Arlington Heights Park District locations, Runners High 'N Tri and www.frontierdays.org. Meet at Miner School; race day registration at 6 a.m. (847) 577-8572 or email craigwcarlson@comcast.net.

8 a.m.-6 p.m. 3v3 soccer tournament. Preregister your team at www.frontierdays.org by June 27. Fields at Hickory and Miner. Schedules posted on Web site by July 1.

10 a.m.-noon. Pet parade. Registration at 10 a.m.; parade at 10:30 a.m. Pets allowed in the park for this event only; must be out of the park at noon. All dogs on leashes.

1:30-3:30 p.m. Water fights, Haddow and Miner streets. Register at judges' stand, 1:30 p.m.; fights at 2 p.m.

2-4 p.m. Decorated cake contest; tent near Stage West. Judging begins at 2:30 p.m. Theme: "Land of Lincoln: 200 Years of Pioneer Spirit."

2:30-3 p.m. Stage West: Buttons the Clown magic show.

4-5 p.m. Stage West: Big Run Wolf Ranch, specializing in education and conservation of North American wildlife.

4:30-6 p.m. Pie eating contest, ages 10-adult. Near Stage West, registration at 4:30 p.m.

5:15-7:15 p.m. Frontier Stage: Heartsfield (Southern country rock).

5:30-6:30 p.m. Stage West: Harper College Steel Drum Band.

7 p.m. Raffle Drawing.

7:15 p.m. Main Stage: Frontier Days Festival scholarship presentations.

7:30 p.m. Main Stage: American English (Beatles tribute band).

10 p.m. Festival closes for 2009.

MONDAY, JULY 6

8 a.m. Frontier Days Take Down Day. Volunteers wanted! Help the committee pack everything up and we will give you coffee, doughnuts and lunch. Show up at 8 a.m.-ish or call (847) 577-8572 for details.
