Huntley sues village hall contractor, claiming shoddy workmanship
Huntley is suing a contractor that worked on the village's new municipal complex, claiming its shoddy workmanship caused serious injury to a police officer.
The lawsuit, filed in McHenry County Circuit Court, seeks more than $50,000 from Mt. Prospect-based A.J. Maggio Co.
The suit alleges that the firm built a police access door in the police station portion of the municipal complex using "deficient materials." The door, according to the suit, would not open with the application of normal pressure and bowed under some weather conditions.
On June 6, 2007, "(Huntley Ofc.) Patrick Callahan suffered a severe injury while opening said police access door in the police station," the suit states.
Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said Callahan suffered a shoulder injury as a result of the accident. The injury left Callahan unable to work and needed significant medical treatment, including surgery, to treat, the suit states.
"He's back to full duty," Perkins said. "He's been back for a while now."
Huntley's insurer, which is also suing the contractor, paid benefits and a workers' compensation settlement to Callahan because of his injury, according to the lawsuit.
A.J. Maggio Co. could not be reached for comment.
The suit is scheduled to appear in court for the first time Oct. 9 before McHenry County Judge Michael Caldwell.
