Argonne nuclear fuel sites accidentally posted online

A federal report, accidentally released online, details locations of nuclear fuel storage at Argonne National Laboratory in Darien.

However, Argonne officials say that poses no risk to security at the facility. If they choose, as a result of the report, to move the "very small amounts" of fuel used for experiments at the laboratory, "it wouldn't be something we'd talk about," Argonne spokeswoman Eleanor Taylor said.

Taylor added that Argonne has been reducing its already minimal amount of nuclear material at the laboratory since 2007.

It's not a secret that Argonne houses nuclear fuel material, but the report was marked "Highly Confidential Safeguards Sensitive," according to The Wall Street Journal.

The nuclear material at Argonne is not weapons-grade material, Taylor said.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the amount of nuclear material Argonne scientists work with is "smaller than the top of a pen cap," Taylor said.

The report also detailed storage locations at a number of other nuclear facilities around the country. The report appeared on the Web site of the Government Printing Office late last month, but was taken down Tuesday. Detailed maps were included in the report. It was intended to provide information for the International Atomic Energy Agency, according to the published report.

Federal officials also told the newspaper the release of the report did not put anyone in jeopardy.
