Elginites, your ballot is almost done

The ballot is set for the April 7 Elgin City Council election.

Well, sort of.

Elgin City Clerk Diane Robertson held a lottery Tuesday to determine who would be first on the list of 11 candidates running for three, 4-year council seats.

Longtime council member Robert Gilliam won the lottery, so he will be listed first. Council member Juan Figueroa will be listed second. The pair filed their nominating petitions at the same time, prompting the lottery.

The rest of the ballot is: incumbent John Walters; Shane Nowak; Linda Quezada; Judith Colletti; Lenora Scruggs; John Prigge; Bruce Trego; Brenda Harris Khan; and Richard Dunne.

Two people, Charlene Sligting and Michael Robins, also filed at the same time for a seat that has two years remaining on it. Sligting won Tuesday's lottery, so she will be first. The rest of the ballot will be: Robins; Al Fernandez; Michael Warren; Emi Morales; and former council member Brenda Rodgers.

A primary election will be held on Feb. 24 to whittle the field of six to four candidates. There will be no primary for the four-year seats, because there weren't enough candidates to require one.

The last day for residents to challenge a candidate's nominating petitions is Dec. 22.
