Companion charged for leaving fatal motorcycle crash
A St. Charles man is accused of leaving the scene of a May motorcycle accident that killed a companion.
David Bruce Bledsoe, 41, of the 34W800 block of Skyline Drive, was charged Tuesday with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, according to Campton Hills Police. A warrant was issued for Bledsoe's arrest and his bail set at $100,000.
The crash occurred about 8 p.m. May 29 on Route 64 in Campton Hills. Police said Michael Smith, 40, of St. Charles was riding his Harley-Davidson eastbound on Route 64 when it veered onto the south shoulder, returned to the road and hit the back of a vehicle headed in the same direction. Smith was killed and his wife, Theresa, a passenger on the motorcycle, was injured.
Campton Hills Police Chief Greg Anderson said a lengthy investigation indicated Smith was the apparent cause of the crash.
The investigation also found that Bledsoe, who was riding his motorcycle with the Smiths, had contact with the victim's motorcycle after the initial crash. Bledsoe was required as a result to report his involvement in the collision, but failed to do so, Anderson said.
