Phony cops stop woman driver in Aurora
Aurora police are investigating an incident in which two men impersonating Aurora officers stopped a woman's car Monday night on the city's far east side and searched both the driver and her vehicle.
The 22-year-old woman told police she was driving west on East New York Street near Asbury Drive around 9:40 p.m. when a dark-colored car with a rotating blue light above the driver's door pulled behind her.
Thinking it was the police - the car resembled a Crown Victoria - the woman pulled to the side of the road west of Asbury.
She said the men put a spotlight on her car and then approached wearing dark clothing and what turned out to be phony patches on their left sleeves that appeared to read "Aurora Police."
The woman said the men threatened to arrest her if she didn't get out of her vehicle.
She told police the men then looked through her vehicle and frisked her.
Police say the suspects were both around 27 years old and white. One was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed about 180 pounds with short brown hair. The other stood about 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighed about 200 pounds and had medium-length brown hair.
Police say neither man had a gun or duty belt and they did not carry hand-held flashlights.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Aurora police at (630) 801-6655 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
