Police chief right about electric cars
After reading "Wheeling OKs electric cars" (June 24), I learned that the former Wheeling Village President Bill Hein, who publicly endorsed the newly elected village President Judy Abruscato, owns a company that markets "Neighborhood Electric Vehicles."
On June 22 the NEVs were approved by a vote of 5-2 to operate on village streets that have speed limits of 35 mph or less in spite of opposition expressed by Police Chief John Stone who called the golf cart-like cars "nothing but a hazard for our village."
In my opinion, few things are more apparent than the following observations this story provides:
• Chicagoland politics continue to leave me with that warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that my hard-earned tax dollars are responsibly allocated in a non-bias fashion.
• Police Chief Stone would be doing himself a favor if he found a new job in a town with an administration that respects his leadership, values his expertise and trusts his opinion.
• I'll be looking forward to reading the periodic Fence Post letter from the new NEV enthusiast instructing the rest of us how to behave when encountering one of these so-called vehicles we are now forced to share the road with.
• Yes, there is a time and place for everything and one can argue that this is the time. Allow me, however, to support Police Chief Stone and argue that NEVs coexisting with Chicagoland traffic, is not the place.
