Elgin pedestrian dies after being hit over weekend

A 20-year-old Elgin man died today from injuries he suffered after being hit by a car over the weekend between South Elgin and St. Charles, police said.

Daniel Almazan, of the 400 block of Stella Street, was walking in the northbound lane of traffic on Route 31 early Saturday morning when a 2004 Toyota Solara, also heading north on Route 31 near Silver Glen Road, ran into him, said Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesman with the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Officers from the sheriff's office and South Elgin responded to the crash at 4:20 a.m.

Almazan on Saturday was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. He died this morning, officials said.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from South Elgin, was not hurt and has not been charged in the case.

Meanwhile, detectives have not ruled whether drugs or alcohol were involved on either side, police said.

The sheriff's office continues its investigation.

Gengler says there are no streetlights lining that particular section of Route 31.
